I come from the generation of girls that used plain baby oil with iodine while laying in the sun for hours, baking our bodies. Now we know that it not only prematurely ages us, but can cause skin cancer, called Melanoma.

This generation of girls is more educated and aware, knowing that they need a high sun protection factor lotion when outside. However, many of them don’t realize that they are really at risk when they go to tanning beds, which can also cause skin cancer and premature wrinkling and aging.

May is Melanoma Prevention Month and this makes sense since it’s the month we traditionally begin to spend more time outside.

Melanoma is the silent killer. What looks like a harmless mole can be a horrible cancer growing out of sight.

I lost a wonderful uncle who was a telephone lineman to the disease years ago. More recently, my girlfriend’s daughter found out at age 19 that she had the disease and lost her battle to it at age 23, leaving behind a husband, baby and grieving family.

For optimum health we need sunshine, but no longer than 20 minutes per day. All things in moderation is key, and sunshine is definitely one where that is so true.

More and more products in the cosmetic lines come with a Sun Protection Factor of 15 or more. Women are usually well covered in that area with their moisturizers and foundations. Men, however, generally don’t use an SPF product unless they are going to the beach or on a boating trip. Children are most susceptible to burns than we adults.

So, moms, wives and girlfriends, please take care to see that your significant others and especially the little ones in your life are protected with an SPF factor lotion before they head outside for any period of time of exposure over 20 minutes.

Just as you go for an annual check up for your overall health, it’s a good idea to schedule an annual exam at the dermatologist to have him or her check you out from head to toe, back to front for what may be a malignant Melanoma.

Have fun this summer while out swimming, boating, or other outdoor activities. Just be sure to wear a hat, take a t-shirt with you on the boat or to the beach, and make sure to get at least a 20 SPF for you, and a 30 or higher SPF for your little ones.

Please attend the WHIM Skin Care Fair May 17 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Allen, 10 am to 4 pm. It’s free and will give you all types of skin care info. Does this hit home?

In my case, I know better because of my training in Weight Management. But, knowing better doesn’t make it easy! Here are some sayings and things I do to stay on track with my own Weight Management:

1) A Moment on the Lips, Forever on the Hips!
2) Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!
3) Keep a Food Diary – “If You Bite it, Write it!”
4) Stop eating before you feel full. It takes the brain awhile to recognize the full feeling.
5) Brush your teeth after dinner each night. You won’t want to have to brush again after a snack
6) Put a picture of yourself at a lower weight, or the picture of a celebrity you want to look like on the refrigerator and on your bathroom mirror.
7) Buy something you really want to wear that is a size smaller than you are now. You’ll think twice before you over eat because you want to wear that new outfit. Hang it by the refrigerator.

Here are More of My Common Sense Weight Management Tips:

a. Log on to www.MyPyramid.gov to set your own personal Weight Management Plan.
b. Purchase small (1/2 sandwich )size baggies so that you can be prepared. Half of success in weight management is being prepared – put fruit and veggies in the small snack bags such as carrot sticks, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes or any veggie that you and your family like.
c. Get rid of all the unhealthy snacks in your house. All of us get the munchies, especially at night after a stressful day at work. If the unhealthy snacks aren’t there, you can’t eat them.
d. Never go grocery shopping when you are hungry or with your kids! Every thing looks good when you are hungry, and you’ll load your refrigerator and pantry with more junk food! Food Advertisers know that if they promote their product to kids, mom’s will be tempted to buy those sugary cereals and snacks because the kids want them.
e. Eat breakfast – a fruit and protein such as eggs or egg beaters and a piece of fruit kick starts that metabolism!
f. Have a mid morning pick me up of a small amount grapes and cheese.
g. Make smoothies at night for you and your families snack. Free ½ in a shaker to eat/drink on the way to work or school the next morning.
h. Eat an orange or apple before lunch and your evening meal. Your appetite will be less and you’ll be working toward the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.
i. Eat on a smaller plate. Research shows that if you use a smaller plate you’ll eat less.

Please contact me for more calorie saving weight management tips!

Debra K. We tend to take "good" health for granted.

Most doctors, while very proficient at what they do, know how to diagnose, prescribe medications and perform surgery, but they don't tell you much about how to get healthy or stay healthy. If we have a broken leg, or need stitches, our doctors are superb!

But, it's really up to us to be informed consumers about what to do to stay healthy.

My advice is, If you want to get healthy and stay healthy, follow the Trinity of Good Health - Exercise, Weight Management and Supplements.

The Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Sports Magazine tell us that we need 30 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. When you think about it, that's only 3.5 hours out of 168 hours that we have each week.

Weight management is a bit more of a challenge. Lets face it. We are a fast food generation. It's less expensive and easier on us to go to the drive up window. It's more expensive to eat fresh fruit and vegetables than it is go satisfy our immediate hunger going through the drive up window for us and for our kids.

It takes time to peel and orange, it takes time to make a salad. But it's worth the time. Being prepared is half the battle when it comes to a healthy, nutritious meal.

Most of our foods today have less than half the nutrients in them that they did half a century ago. Fruits and vegetables have to be picked green and shipped across country.

We need good multivitamins to take up the slack for our fast food treks and our foods that just don't have the nutrients we need.

Please, lets do us all a favor - our kids and ourselves! Spend more time and attention to our bodies than we do on our cars!

In Friendship, and
In Motion - Toward Optimum Health,
Debra Pope
debrapope@whim-mckinney.org
cell #214-592-5196
home - office #972-924-3145
e-fax - #214-594-9596
http://www.womenshealthinmotion.org/InMotion.org
"Empowering Women to Achieve Optimum Health"

Women's Health in Motion Today - January 2008

Happy New Year to all Women & Families in Motion!

At this time of year we are all acting on our New Year’s Resolution.

It’s a known fact that in this country, we spend more money on our cars than we do on our Preventive Health Care. We extend an invitation to all area organizations to inform us on what they have done to raise funds this year and what they plan to do it in the future here in our area. In doing so, they will give all of us who want to try to make a difference in the lives of all concerned, a place to know more about what is needed and how to get involved to help.

I am seeking a breast cancer survivor to be a spokesperson for WHIM and go with me to area events to invite everyone that has a desire to be a part of our Breast Cancer Awareness Expo and Forum. My goal is to make this an annual event and make it a place we can all come to for information about what goes on in our area to aid/assist those who want or need assistance with regard to breast cancer.

My intent is not to take the place of huge and successful events, but to provide a forum for us to discuss, share and decide which events our area folks want to participate in. I’d also like to mix in presentations done by families, survivors or individuals who would like to share their story. Of course the press is invited to come and do human interest stories of each and every one of the speakers, persons or organizations.

I want to encourage each of you to join me at the McKinney Chamber functions such as LINKS at the Salt Grass every Wednesday at 7:30 am, Women’s Alliance of McKinney Events, The Young Professionals Organization, Stonebridge Ladies Ranch Association, BNI and TNT networking groups to help get the word out.

I will be the presenter this week at North Collin BNI at Eldorado Country Club on Wednesday, September 12. The meeting takes place from 11:30 am to 1 pm.

Please join us to find out more about how we can work together to bring awareness by inviting all area fund raising organizations to bring us up to date on their fund raising activities.

Tickets to our Breast Cancer Awareness Expo will be $3 in advance and $5 at the door.

I’ll be updating the web site, http://www.womenshealthinmotion.org/, our Blog and shopping cart.

Women's Health in Motion Today - August 8, 2007

Hello to all Women in Motion!

I have great news to report!

WHIM has the support of the most elite group of Health and Wellness Professionals in our community and our local media.

Our Pajama Party on Friday evening, July 20 at the Eldorado Country Club was well attended. The event was focusing on Melanoma Prevention, since May is Melanoma Month. We had great support from all the medical and beauty community in McKinney and Frisco. Our title sponsors were Medical Center of McKinney, McKinney Regional Cancer Center, Rene's Lagniappe Hair Design and Dr. Kathryn Wood with Dermalase. Also, many of our area not for profit organizations participated as well. We dedicated the day to Mya Spencer the daughter of my dear friends Cocoa and Mike Spencer of Sarasota, Florida. Mya was 23 years old and passed away 3 years after ago after a 4 year battle with Melanoma. Cocoa Spencer and Joanne Seaman flew in from Florida to support us in our effort to bring Melanoma in to awareness. It was a fun day for a very serious cause.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Theresa Summers for all her help with the admin work she did on the event. I couldn't have done it without her.

Also, Jean Schlipman and Celine Matthiessen of the Schlippman Foundation were valuable assets and a great help.

Our next event is schedule for July 20 on Hormone Replacement Therapy, Arthritis and Osteoporosis. It is to be a "Pajama Party" as part of my 55th birthday celebration. I am dedicating the event for July 20 to my mother, Evelyn Oliver, age 84 who is suffering from debilitating Arthritis.

I believe we will be able to have the event in the evening from 4 pm to 11 pm at the El Dorado Country Club in McKinney. I also want to have a wine and cheese party at the kick-off of the event.

The next event will be August 25 at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, the former "Old Court House" in downtown McKinney. The Ice Cream Crank-off will be taking place and we feel that we can "piggy back" on to this very successful, and heavily attended event with a Family Health Fair.

Our web site has been launched. It is in it's infancy and still needs many additions and upgrades that we are working on.

I have interviewed Sales Staff and have selected two very outstanding ladies to assist me in selling memberships and booth space for upcoming events. More about them in a later post.

There will be 4 components to our organization: 1) Our web site, 2) Membership - both individaul and business, 3) Expo and Seminar Events, 4) our own Women's Health in Motion Magazine. The sales staff will assist in selling all four components.

We have big plans and dreams in Women's Health in Motion. The plan is to take the organization state wide, and nationwide.

If you are not already a member, please do join and help us further the cause of optimum health. Individual membership is $29 and business membership is $99 for 1 year.

It is a well known that the wife and the mother of the family is the monitor and promoter of health for the whole family. When the wife and mother is more educated about health, the entire family is more healthy.

I look forward to meeting more health professionals and indivudals whose focus is promoting healthy living.

In Motion,
Toward Optimum Health,
Debra K.
